Crown/Bridge Preps

Thank you for choosing The Dental Clinic for your dental care. Proper post-operative care is crucial for a smooth recovery after your crown/bridge preparation. Please follow these instructions carefully:

  1. Numbness:

    • The anesthetic used during your procedure may leave your lips, teeth, and tongue feeling numb for a few hours. Avoid chewing until the numbness has completely worn off to prevent accidentally biting your lips, cheeks, or tongue.

  2. Temporary Crown Care:

    • A temporary has been placed to protect your tooth until the permanent crown/bridge is ready. Avoid chewing on the side with the temporary crown, especially with hard or sticky foods, to prevent dislodging it.

    • If the temporary comes off, gently clean it and the exposed tooth, then reattach it with temporary dental adhesive or toothpaste. Contact our office as soon as possible for a proper reattachment.

  3. Pain Management:

    • Mild discomfort or sensitivity is normal after crown/bridge preparation. Take prescribed pain medications as directed. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can also help manage discomfort.

    • Sensitivity to hot, cold, and pressure is common. This should decrease over time. If sensitivity persists or worsens, contact our office.

  4. Diet:

    • Stick to soft foods and avoid chewing on the side with the temporary until the permanent crown/bridge is placed. Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that could damage the temporary.

  5. Oral Hygiene:

    • Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing twice a day and flossing daily. Be gentle around the temporary crown to avoid dislodging it.

    • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water) 2-3 times a day to reduce inflammation and keep the area clean.

  6. Avoid Using the Affected Side:

    • Avoid using the side of your mouth with the temporary for chewing until the permanent crown/bridge is placed. This will help prevent any damage to the temporary and reduce discomfort.

  7. Follow-Up:

    • It is crucial to return for your follow-up appointment to have the permanent crown/bridge placed. This step is essential to protect the tooth and restore its function.

  8. Signs of Concern:

    • If you experience severe pain, prolonged sensitivity, swelling, fever, or signs of infection (pus, foul odor), or if your temporary comes off and you cannot reattach it, contact our office immediately for an evaluation.

If you have any questions or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us. Your comfort and recovery are our top priorities. Thank you for choosing The Dental Clinic for your dental care needs.
