Extractions

Thank you for choosing The Dental Clinic for your dental care. Proper post-operative care is crucial for a speedy recovery after your tooth extraction. Please follow these instructions carefully:

  1. Bleeding:

    • Bite firmly on the gauze pad placed on the extraction site for 30-45 minutes to help control bleeding. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze and apply gentle pressure for another 30 minutes.

    • Avoid spitting, using straws, or rinsing your mouth vigorously for the first 24 hours to prevent dislodging the blood clot.

  2. Pain Management:

    • Take prescribed pain medications as directed. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can also help manage discomfort.

    • Apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek for 15-20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling and pain.

  3. Swelling:

    • Swelling is normal and can peak 2-3 days after the extraction. Continue using ice packs for the first 24-48 hours, then switch to warm compresses if needed.

  4. Diet:

    • Stick to soft foods and liquids for the first 24-48 hours. Avoid hot, spicy, and crunchy foods that can irritate the extraction site.

    • Drink plenty of fluids but avoid using a straw, as the suction can dislodge the blood clot.

  5. Oral Hygiene:

    • Do not rinse your mouth or brush near the extraction site for the first 24 hours. After that, rinse gently with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water) 2-3 times a day to keep the area clean.

    • Continue brushing and flossing your other teeth, but be gentle around the extraction site.

  6. Activity:

    • Rest and avoid strenuous activities for the first 24-48 hours to prevent increased bleeding and promote healing.

  7. Smoking and Alcohol:

    • Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol for at least 72 hours after the extraction, as they can interfere with the healing process and increase the risk of complications.

  8. Signs of Concern:

    • If you experience severe pain, prolonged bleeding, swelling that worsens after 48 hours, fever, or signs of infection (pus, foul odor), contact our office immediately.

  9. Follow-Up:

    • Attend your scheduled follow-up appointment so we can monitor your healing progress and address any concerns.
